A suspected Myanmarese Yaba trader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Nazir para near the Naf River bank in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Myanmar national Mohammad Darbesh, 20.
Commanding officer of BGB-2 Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Abu Zar Al Zahid said as they had secret information that a gang of Yaba traders were smuggling a consignment of Yaba into the country through the Naf River, a patrol team of the border force conducted a drive in Nazir para adjacent to sluice gate no-3 area around 3am.
Sensing the presence of the BGB members, a group of Yaba traders opened fire at them, promoting the BGB members to fire back that triggered a gunfight, he said.
Darbesh and another Yaba trader, Mohammad Selim, 20, were caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries.
They were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared Darbesh dead.
