At least 28 people were injured in pre-poll violence yesterday, as the campaigning for the civic poll reached a crescendo six days ahead of the election.
Our correspondent from Jessore reports: Six people were injured when some supporters of Jessore municipality mayor Maruful Islam, who is seeking re-election on a BNP ticket, came under attack in Missionpara area yesterday morning.
On receiving news, local police rushed to the spot, and rescued the candidate and his supporters. The injured were sent to a local hospital. When asked, Maruful Islam blamed Awami League (AL) supporters for the attack.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, Shikder Akkas Ali, said no casualities were reported.
Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to avert further untoward incidents.
Our correspondent from Comilla reports: The motorcade of Col. (retd) Anwarul Azim, former BNP lawmaker and the party’s mayoral candidate for Laksam municipality, allegedly came under attack from activists of Chhatra League and Sechchasebak League at Gazimura in the upazila.
Police rushed to the area after being informed of the incident and chased the attackers away. Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble, Monwar Hossain, OC (Investigation) of Laksam Police Station, said.
Azim said five of his supporters, including his driver and personal secretary, were hurt in the incident.
