Reigning champions Afghanistan showed their might when they crushed Bangladesh 4-0 in their first match of SAFF Championship at Trivandrum Stadium, Kerala, India yesterday.
Afghanistan, after surviving a close call early in the 15th minute, took the lead in the 30th minute through Mashi Saighani. They doubled the margin in the very next minute when Faysal Shaesesth found the mark with a powerful shot. Zubayar Amiri extended the lead in the 41st minute. Khaibar Amani closed the account in 69th minute when he beat Bangladesh keeper in a second attempt.
Earlier, in the first match of the day, Maldives snatched a hard fought 3-2 win over Bhutan at the same venue.
Ali Ashfaq, the most prolific national star of the Maldives team, scored one and provided two good passes to help the team begin their SAFF Championship campaign on a winning note. Imaz Ahmed, Abdullah Asadullah and Ali Ashfaq scored one goal each for Maldives while Tshering Dorji scored the lone goal for Bhutan.
