Accusing the ruling party of unleashing terrorism across the country, BNP yesterday sought security for its candidates, agents and a congenial atmosphere for voters during the municipal polls, reports UNB.
“We would like to remind the Election Commission not to be biased towards ruling party candidates …discharge your constitutional duty by giving necessary directions for keeping the administration neutral. You must ensure the security of the opposition candidates and their agents,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a press briefing, he further said, “We want a guarantee so that the voters can cast their votes as per their choice. Or else, you’ll be treated as traitor like Mir Jafar.”
Rizvi alleged that Awami League and the administration merged together in the municipal polls. “The ruling party men are violating the election code of conduct in a desperate manner.”
The BNP leader also alleged that the BNP candidates and their supporters are being subjected to harassment, obstruction and intimidation in different areas, including Dinajpur, Jessore, Satkhira, Faridpur, Brahmanbaria, Rajbari, Comilla, Mymensingh, Bogra, Savar and Khagrachhari. He also accused the ruling party men of damaging BNP candidates’ posters, attacking their election campaigns and snatching their loudspeakers.
Referring to media reports, Rizvi said a number of professional terrorists groups have been hired from the capital and taken them to different municipalities.
Criticising the Election Commission for its inaction, the BNP leader said polls violence has marked a sharp rise as the Commission has no action against it.
