The ruling Awami League (AL) is unhappy with the Election Commission’s (EC's) role in conducting the municipal polls and has alleged that the commission is favouring the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday made the allegation while he was talking to journalists at the EC secretariat in the capital, after a meeting with chief election commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
“The EC is lenient towards BNP and is behaving rudely with us,” he alleged.
“Our candidates and leaders are being harassed in different areas with charges of violation of the electoral code of conduct. BNP candidates are organising motorcycle rallies and holding showdowns in different areas, but we are being blamed. Law enforcement officials and returning officers are harassing our candidates and leaders. We are not getting equal treatment from the EC,” he said.
The AL leader further said, “The BNP is enjoying additional benefits in the election even though they are not in Parliament. If they are given additional facilities, there will be no level playing field.”
On being asked what he told the CEC during the meeting, he said, “We have requested him to play an impartial role in the election. We have told him to take action against our candidates and leaders after investigation.”
