Campaign on recognising women's contribution in food security

Eight journalists from print and electronic media have been awarded fellowship yesterday for their outstanding reports on female farmers.
The fellowship recipients are- Jhorna Moni of Bhorer Kagoj, M Shafiul Al Imran of Channel I online, (from Dhaka division), Rashedul Islam of Dainik Azadi (Chittagong), Hafizur Rahman Shaon of Jugantor (Barishal), Mafia Akter Mukta of Radio Padma (Rajshahi), Najmul Islam from Channel 9 ( Rangpur),  Abhijeet Pal of Independent Television ( Khulna) and Sadikur Rahman Saki of Channel I (Sylhet).
As a part of the Oxfam’s national campaign, yesterday Society for Media and Suitable Human-communication Techniques (SoMaSHTe) organised the fellowship awarding ceremony at the capital’s Seven-hill Restaurant. Oxfam launched the campaign in Bangladesh in 2014 as a part of Oxfam GROW campaign for recognising women’s contribution in food security.
Professor Golam Rahman said: “Agriculture sector contributes around 19 per cent to the country’s GDP, but the news coverage of the sector is significantly low.” He asked the award recipients to cover more news on the sector. It was learnt from the programme that 41.8 male and 68.1 female labour forces have direct involvement in agriculture. Only 4 per cent female has land ownership.
However, participation women farmers in the sectors of crop processing, preservation, seeds production, cattle rearing, vegetables and fruits production, food processing and marketing has increased significantly. Males have been involving in wage based works which give the female farmers paths to leadership in the sector. But the females are not recognised with due respects.
