Tk 50,000cr needed by 2021 to meet poultry demands

STAFF REPORTER

Speakers at a workshop said an investment of Tk 50,000 crore will be needed for the poultry sector to meet the demand of eggs and chicken across the country by 2021. They said that the country will need 4.5 crore eggs and around 4, 000 tonnes of meat daily by that time.
The speakers were addressing the inaugural session of the workshop—'The challenge of animal protein demand by 2021: public-private policy planning in Dhaka'—organised by the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC) at the Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh, Dhaka on Wednesday.
They said public-private partnership initiatives and government support will be needed to expand the sector.
Fisheries and livestock minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque, the chief guest at the event, highlighted the importance of providing loans at single-digit interest rates to poultry entrepreneurs to expand the local industry. “If the interest rate is 12-15 per cent, why will the entrepreneurs invest in the poultry sector? Neighbouring countries charge single-digit interest rates for loans pertaining to this sector. Bangladesh must follow their example to get investments,” he said.
The minister expressed hope that the finance minister would consider the need for expanding the local poultry sector and take necessary action to bring down the interest rate. “The local poultry sector will play a vital role in supplying animal protein by 2021. Therefore, the supply of eggs and meat will have to be boosted. At present, the local industry in Bangladesh can only supply cheap animal protein,” he added.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Abdul Matlub Ahmad
emphasised the need for insurance for the poultry sector. He said the government should focus on expanding the poultry sector since it can supply the maximum amount of protein at cheaper rates.
BPICC convenor Mashiur Rahman also stressed the need for the government's support to expand the sector. “We're preparing to export our products. We request the government to simplify the certification for exports,” he said.
The BPICC chief announced that the “Poultry Media Award” will be given in March 2016.
Shamsul Arefin Khaled, joint convenor of BPICC, Ajay Kumar Roy, director-general of the department of livestock, Dr Subir Boiragi, a research fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue  (CPD), also spoke at the event.
