DSEX crosses 4600 points to finish week

The benchmark price index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) crossed 4600-point mark again to finish the week yesterday when the major price index of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended significantly higher, reports BSS.
DSEX, the prime indicator of the country's stock market, was hovering below 4600 points since Decem-ber 7 because of lackluster trade while investors were skeptical about the direction of the capital market. The index, however,
managed to cross the upper psychological barrier to finish at 4608.32, with gaining 1.97 per cent or 87.45 points over the week.
The two selective indices - blue-chip DS30 and Shariah DSES - also advanced by 29.69 points to 1747.43 and by 15.89 points to 1090.59 respectively.
The trading began in declining trend on Sunday, but it turned around on Monday following the Bangladesh Bank's decision on easing rules for bank's investment in stocks.
During the week, which was comparatively active, NBFI gained most with 7.06 per cent followed by ceramic 3.68 per cent, textile 3.06 per cent and IT Sector 2.57 per cent. The top gaining companies were BIFC 19.5 per cent, Barka Power 16.8 per cent and GQ Ball Pen 16.8 per cent.
The major losing sectors were mutual fund and pharmaceuticals with 1.26 per cent and 0.36 per cent loss respectively when the major losing companies were LR Global MF1 10.1 per cent, 7th ICB 7.8 per cent and Progressive Life 7.8 per cent.
The daily average trade value of the week rose by 43.35 per cent to Taka 437.35 crore when the average trade volume increased by 57.24 per cent to 9.68 crore shares.
The market remained in favour of sellers, with 231 issues closing the week higher when 68 incurred loss and 29 were static.
Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also finished the week up, with the major CSCX index rising by 41.29 points to finish up at 8550.06.
