HC tells EC

The High Court (HC) yesterday directed the Election Commission (EC) to accept the nomination of Awami League (AL) rebel candidate Ahsan Habib Pranjol for Kachua municipality’s mayoral election in Chandpur.
In response to a writ petition, an HC vacation bench, comprising Justice SM Emdadul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman, stayed the EC decision that had cancelled Pranjol’s nomination paper. The bench also asked the EC to explain why the cancellation of Pranjol’s nomination paper should not be declared illegal.
The returning officer of Chandpur cancelled Pranjol’s nomination on December 6, alleging that he had concealed information in his wealth statement and about the number of cases filed against him. On December 12, the appellate authority, led by the Chandpur deputy commissioner, upheld the returning officer’s decision.
