From cash to digital

NILADRY ADHIKARY

In line with nation’s Vision 2021, this week the Government of Bangladesh announced that it will accelerate it’s transition from cash to digital payments, marked by the new partnership with the Better Than Cash Alliance. Access to Information (A2I), the government’s main driving force behind the realisation of Vision 2021, will play a major role towards the implementation of this new agreement.
Under their Vision of 2021, the government plans to digitise all forms of fees from citizens and payments made to citizens. Also they are planning to digitise all forms of domestic and international remittances and financial transactions from e-commerce.
Digitisation of payment method is gaining recognition throughout the world, as it’s an impressive way to reduce costs and increase transparency. Thus with this new announcement, the government will look to advance public and private sector collaboration to build necessary infrastructure to reach a large number of citizens throughout the country.
” Joining the Better Than Cash Alliance and committing to a holistic transition from cash to digital payments is a part of the transformative role of information and communication technologies and in creating inclusive growth in Bangladesh. Our efforts will focus specifically on achieving financial inclusion through our more than 50000 Digital Centers that were established in all rural and urban local government institutions around the country.” –Abul Kalam Azad, principal secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office and chair of the Steering Committee for Access to information Programme.
Based at the United States, the Better than Cash Alliance is a partnership of government, companies and international organisations that accelerates the transition from cash to digital payments to drive inclusive growth and help people lift themselves out of poverty. Bangladesh’s collaboration with them will allow them to learn from other countries and apply those learning to improve efficiency and transparency in the nation.
Dr Ruth Goodwin-Groen, managing director of the Better Than Cash Alliance said,  “Bangladesh has shown great vision in setting out their Digital Bangladesh Vision 2021
agenda and has already achieved impressive progress with the provision of salaries to government employees all over the country via digital means.”
Bangladesh will join the Alliance with 40 other members, and they will have access to the knowledge and technical expertise offered by the Alliance. This will help them the member countries to shift to digital payment methods very quickly.
