Speakers emphasises on girl�s safety

RAJSHAHI: Speakers in a discussion yesterday said ensuring safety of girls through combating all sorts of violence especially sexual harassment against them has become an urgent need for boosting women empowerment, reports BSS.
They observed that sexual harassment at public places restricts girls’ rights to education, rights to mobility and rights to freedom. So, the social crime must be averted through forging social movement. Gender-sensitive social mindset can help establish rights of the adolescents through reducing violence and repression against them.
The observations came at a view-sharing meeting titled ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment against Schoolgirls, Child Marriage and Violence against Women’ held at Safawang community centre in Rajshahi city.
‘Meyeder Jonnyo Nirapad Nagorikotto (MEJNIN)’ programme organised the meeting in association with Gender Justice and Diversity Division of BRAC.
More than 70 people comprising government and non-government organisations’ concerned, students, teachers, network members, public representatives, members of the civil society and other stakeholders attended the meeting.
Additional District Magistrate Syed Faruque Ahmed addressed the meeting as chief guest while District Education Officer Rafiqul Islam and Director of Islamic Foundation Mahabub Alam spoke as special guests.
During her presentation on the topic, Jharna Rani Das, Senior Sector
Specialist of Mejnin highlighted the aims and objectives of the event and sought all-out cooperation of all quarters on how to prevent and resist sexual harassment and all other violation against girls. Sector Specialist Feroj Kabir also presented a concept paper on the issue. The speakers viewed that mass-media has a pivotal role to play to create awareness among the general public through objective reporting.
Chief Guest Syed Faruque Ahmed said emphasis should be given on collective efforts of all quarters including guardians, schoolteachers and members of the civil society for creating a safe environment for girls. Terming the child marriage as gross violation of human rights he said there is no alternative to check it substantially. More responsive role of marriage registrar and imams including other community leaders could be the effective means of controlling child marriage as it leads to various violence and repression against women.
District Women Affairs Officer Shahanaj Begum, City Social Service Officer Shamima Sharmin and District Information Officer Md Shamsuzzaman also spoke. Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat moderated the discussion.
