With a cold wave now sweeping the region, various types of cold-related diseases have broken out in the city putting public health under severe threat.
A large number of people, especially children and aged ones, have been attacked with pneumonia, diarrhea, skin and other cold-related diseases in the city. Biting cold, excessive dust and pollen are main reasons behind the spread of the diseases, said Prof Dr Ashim Kumad Das, head of the paeditric department of SBMCH. He added some common cold-related diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiolitis, diarrhea and skin diseases are spreading in the region in a threatening way.
arisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital sources said about 200 patients, including 60 children, were admitted to the hospital in the last three days with the fall in temperature.
Condition of newborn babies beggars description. Every day, these types of patients are crowding into the hospital in increasing numbers.
At the same time, the district civil surgeon’s office sources said that more than 100 children took admission in nine upazila health complexes of the district with the same complaints.
Children are being brought here with viral, bacterial and some allergic infections because of the intense cold and some asthma and pneumonia patients need oxygen and nebuliser support, said Prof Dr Zahid Hossain, child specialist and former principal of SBMC.
