The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) yesterday framed charges against former BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker, Shakhawat Hossain, and eight others for crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
After framing charges against the accused, the three-member ICT helmed by Justice Anwarul Haque fixed January 31 to start trial proceedings with the prosecution’s introductory speech. Earlier in the day, police produced Shakhawat, Billal Hossain Biswas and Lutfar Morol before the ICT. The three are among eight indicted persons currently in police custody.
Meanwhile, six indicted accused are on the run including: Ibrahim Hossain of Nehalpur, Sheikh Md Mujibur Rahman and Kazi Ohidul Islam of Shekhpura, Aziz Sardar of Mominpur, Aziz Sardar of Boga, and Abdul Khaleq Morol of Altapol in Keshabpur upazila. The ICT has framed five separate charges of murder, rape, abduction, torture, confinement and arson against them.
Shakhawat, who was former lawmaker from Jessore, is now involved in Jatiya Party’s politics.
On September 8, in response to separate petitions, the ICT accepted charges against them and cleared three other suspects of charges of having committed war crimes. The police arrested Shakhawat from the ground floor of a house in Masterpara of Uttar Khan in the capital on November 30, 2014.
State-appointed Abdus Shukur Khan will be the defence while prosecutor Jiad Al Malum will represent the state during trial proceedings.
