Intra-party clashes marked the election campaigns both Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidates in different parts of the country yesterday. At least 10 people were hurt when AL rivals fought pitched battles in Chouddagram, Comilla, which spilled over to the Dhaka-Chittagong highway and disrupted traffic. Trouble erupted when two rival processions, led by AL mayoral candidate Mizanur Rahman and independent candidate Enam Patwary, hurled brickbats and fired shots at each other. Ten people were hurt in another intra-party clash in Shariatpur, witnesses said.
In Sharishabari, Jamalpur, supporters of BNP mayoral candidate AKM Fayzlul Kabir Talukder and those of party rebel candidate Ruhul Amin Selim confronted each other while campaigning in the Aramnagar Bazaar area, leaving at least 15 people hurt.
Witnesses said both the sides used brickbats to pelt each other. On receiving news, the police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Cops have been deployed to prevent further outbreak of violence.
In Savar, at least 15 people were injured as some miscreants attacked the house of a BNP-backed mayoral candidate at Bank Colony yesterday. Witnesses said 20/25 miscreants, riding motorbikes, swooped on the residence of BNP-backed mayoral candidate Badiuzzaman Bodi and fired blank shots when he was in a meeting with his party men in the afternoon. He returned to his house today after securing bail in a violence case. At one stage, the supporters of Bodi hurled brickbats towards the miscreants, triggering a clash that left 15 people injured.
The miscreants also vandalised some furniture of the house and motorcycles during the incident. However, Badiuzzaman Bodi escaped unhurt.
