Karachi Kings acquired Shakib Al Hasan while Tamim Iqbal and pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman were drafted into Peshwar Zalmi and Lahore Qalandars during the players’ draft of the maiden Pakistan Super League (PSL) yesterday.
Shakib was grouped in the topmost category, Platinum, in the PSL drafts as Karachi called for the Bangladeshi star in the second round of the Platinum drafts of the five-franchisees competition. The ace all-rounder is the only Bangladeshi player who has played all of the domestic Twenty20 tournaments across the world including the high profile IPL.
A fee of $140,000 has been determined for each Platinum player. Diamond, Gold, Silver and Emerging players are classified: $70,000, $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 respectively.
Shakib was the second pick by Karachi Kings, the most expensive franchisee, after they grabbed Icon Shoaib Malik. The Kings also acquired the players like Mohammad Amir, who was outstanding in BPL after serving his five-year ban for spot-fixing scandal.
Both Tamim Iqbal and Mustafizur Rahman, a player who has recently included in the ICC’s ODI team of the year, was bracketed into the Gold Categories. While Tamim got Shahid Afridi in his team, Mustafizur will walk with Chris Gayle who is the Icon of Lahore Qalandars.
A total of 310 players, including 138 from Pakistan, are open to be drafted with 29 slotted in the Platinum category, 39 in Diamond, 60 in Gold, 123 in Silver, and 59 in Emerging.
Shakib was the only Bangladeshi player to be slotted into Platinum Category.
A total of 10 Bangladeshi players including Shakib were put into the players draft with Mushfiqur Rahim, Soumya Sarkar and Shahriar Nafees being slotted to Gold alongside Mustafizur and Tamim.
Mahmudullah Riyad, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Mominul Haque and Imrul Kayes were in Silver Category. The number of players from Bangladesh might be increased if any of them is acquired by the franchisees in the second phase of the players draft today.
In the first phase of players draft yesterday, the five franchisees got the opportunity to acquire the players from three categories- Platinum, Diamond and Gold.
The PSL earlier named five Icons – Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Shane Watson, Kevin Pietersen and Chris Gayle- each of whom will be paid $200,000. As expectedly, the Icons were the first pick by the respective franchisees with Afridi going for Peshwar Zalmi, Malik in Karachi Kings, Shane Watson in Islamabad United, Kevin Pietersen in Quetta Gladiators and Chris Gayle in Lahore Qalanders.
Islamabad United drafted Misbah-ul-Haq and Andre Russell from the top category barring Watson, while Peshawar Zalmi included Wahab Riaz and Darren Sammy in their squad. Sarfraz Ahmed will be playing for Quetta Gladiators, while Umar Akmal and Dwayne Bravo in Lahore Qalandars.
