Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is keen to organise a Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe instead of proposed Test series in January in a bid to give the players an opportunity to take a good preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Twenty20.
BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon was apparently in favour of replacing the Test series with Twenty20 cricket given the magnitude of the upcoming global tournaments. But he doesn’t rule out the possibility of Test series.
Papon said, he believed he could convince Zimbabwe to play the Test series any time after the World Twenty20 as Bangladesh have no international schedule in April to August. But he disclosed noting is finalised yet and the talk about Twenty20 series is going on.
“We are yet to take any decision regarding series. We will hold a meeting with coach, skipper, selection committee and the board members. I think it will soon be done. Thereafter, we can take a right decision that whether we play T20.”
One of the main concerns of BCB president that if the Test series is taken place, the players who would play the T20 cricket would have to sit idol. According to him, playing T20 International would keep the players charged up ahead of the mega events.
“But I think we could play Test later on as we have a big gap after the end of the World Twenty20. As we have no international commitment till August, we could utilise the gap to play the Test series. I think we could convince Zimbabwe,” he said.
“We will not get enough opportunity to play T20 before the Asia Cup and World T20. In that sense, we have kept T20 ahead. The proposal is on the table as of now.”
Zimbabwe originally is scheduled to play a full series including three format of cricket simultaneously. But the postponement of home series against Australia forced BCB to play the ODI and Twenty20 series in November while the Test series was scheduled to play in January.
