An early strike from Marzia enabled Bangladesh football team to crown the AFC Under-14 Girls’ Regional Championship after downing the defending champions Nepal yesterday at the Army Physical Training Centre, Kathmandu.
Marzia, one of the 10 students from the Kalasindhur School, also the village of Kalasindhur of the Under-14 national side, blasted the all important goal of the final on 16th minute to emerge the first ever champions for any level of Bangladesh women’s football.
Bangladesh, who stormed into the final after outplaying the Bhutan by 16-0 and a 1-1 draw in the group leg match, eliminated Iran by 2-0 in the semifinal before beating the hosts demonstrating better performance.
It is an outstanding achievement for the Bangladesh women football, which they earned for the first time.
Later in the evening the Bangladesh team returned home from Kathmandu.
In an almost one-sided first half Bangladesh were nearer to double the tally but skipper Krishna Rani’s close range shot missed the target on 34th, a minute before the short whistle in this 70 minutes encounter.
Bangladesh, who kept their first half momentum to play with full authority, put the opponents under immense pressure and almost going to score the second goal but lady luck favoured the hosts Nepal as a strong effort from Krishna Rani shattered the side post.
Bangladesh had two more occasions to increase the margin but on 54th Krishna Rani’s show narrowly went out and another effort from Marzia was saved by the Nepali goalkeeper.
“We are very, very happy and proud to bring the title home,” Bangladesh’s skipper Krishna Rani Sarkar told a news agency after receiving the winner’s medal from Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
“We worked so hard for this,” Sarkar said.
The final was earlier scheduled to be held on April 25, the day a powerful 7.8-magnitude quake shook Nepal killing almost 8,900 people.
Seven teams, including India, Bhutan, Maldives, Iran and Sri Lanka, participated in the championship.
Bangladesh XI: Taslima(GK), Shamsunnahar, Ruma, Sheuli, Nargis, Sanjida, Moushumi, Krishna Rani(C), Marzia, Swapna, Maria.
