BCB stages a flawless BPL-3

The BPL-3 emerged out as a successful venture for Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) after they dealt with the two great hurdles- payment and match fixing issue- astutely.
The gross income from the tournament is Tk. 25 crore, making it a huge success but more importantly the board restored its image by organising a flawless BPL, unlike the other two editions.
The first two editions of the tournament were marred by payment fiasco and match-fixing scandal which tarnished the board’s image to the international players and the other cricket boards. The challenge was to clean the image, providing an unblemished BPL to which the BCB is successful, believed its president Nazmul Hassan Papon.
“As I said earlier, BPL was a huge pain, it was the most painful event I had organised in my tenure. So I had to sort out the problems and take some measures to make it disciplined. We think this time it was well-organised and more disciplined,” Papon told the reporters yesterday.
“We haven’t received any complain as of now so in that sense, we can say that it is successful.”
To BCB utter pleasure, no foreign or local players and officials as of now  raised any complain about payment issue.
Papon however presented a data of the franchisee’s payment. According to his version, Comilla Victorians and Chittagong have already cleared 100 percent payment to the local and foreign players. Rangpur Riders paid their 100 percent payment to overseas players and 75 percent to local players. Dhaka Dynamites, Barisal Bulls and Sylhet Super Stars cleared their 75 percent payment to both local and foreign players.
As per the rules of BPL, all of the franchisees are bound to clear the 100 percent payment within the 30 days of the completion of the tournament.
Papon informed: “A total of 65 overseas players played in the BPL. There were six foreign coaches and physio with them. They all expressed their gratification and desire to come in the next BPL.”
To resist the match-fixing issue was other challenge to the BPL governing council and BCB to which they deemed them as successful, said Papon.
There was though speculation about a match in Chittagong in which Chittagong Vikings played against Barisal Bulls.
“Local ACSU is working with those intensively. We are yet to receive any match-fixing allegation. We’re not willing to talk about the matter without concrete allegation or evidence,” said Papon.
“You know how sincere we are to uproot all corruptions from our cricket. We took ACUS in our own expenditure to investigate the match-fixing scam in the second edition of BPL. We punished a player like Ashraful. So you understand we have zero tolerance about it. We formed ACSU to look into these matters. They were working on every match and if they find out any suspicious things, they will appraise us.”
He added: “We’re investigating the matter of Chris Gayle. He is scheduled to play a semi-final match. It’s not that it’s match-fixing issue. We would investigate what problem he has with the franchisee since there was some report about it.”
The BCB president also expressed his satisfaction over spectator’s response in BPL-3.
About the verbal clash between Tamim Iqbal and Sylhet owner Azizul Islam he said, “
“We’ve given it to the disciplinary committee. They may be made a report. We will take a decision in the next board meeting after getting the report.”
He also informed Tillakarantne Dilshan was penalized Tk. 20,000 for deliberately pushing Imrul Kayes in the match between Chittagong and Comilla.
About national player’s performance in BPL, Papon said: “I believe that BPL will be very helpful for the coming two big tournaments —Asia Cup and ICC World T20. We have expectation on those players, many of them were not up to the mark. Again, some old players performed well. Some new faces drew the attention.
Match referee Roqibul Hassan’s ‘toss issue’ came to the fore during the eliminator match between Dhaka Dynamites and Barisal Bulls. Roqibul picked up the coin before announcing the toss result which raised a problem. Thereafter he made some comments to a private TV channel which aired the toss incident. His comments crossed the decency line.
Papon said: “Firstly if we talk about toss issue, we don’t know lot in such things whether toss result is announced before it was picked up. We don’t get any rules about it. I saw in most of the matches, thus way the toss result was announced. We get to see such things in other countries. We will ask ICC to have any rule about it. Unfortunately I don’t see what he says about. But he talks about me. I’ve seen it. It has been given to disciplinary committee. They will take necessary action.”
