JMB man confesses to attack on Iskcon temple

A suspected militant of banned Islamist outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), held over the attack on an Iskcon temple in Dinajpur on December 10, confessed to his involvement in the attack, said police officials.
The detainee, identified as Shariful Islam, 28, gave his confession before the Dinajpur Senior judicial Magistrate Court of Nazmul Hossain on Saturday evening, said Redwanur Rahim, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police in Dinajpur.
Shariful, earlier on Thursday, also confessed to the gun attack on Italian national Piero Parolari, 67, on November 18 morning. The suspected JMB militant was detained from the Iskcon temple area in Kaharol on December 10 night.
The DB officials declined of elaborating the statement as an investigation is ongoing.
Shariful Islam, 28, son of Sakhawat Hossain of Monoharpur village under Polashbari upazila of Gaibandha, admitted to the court his involvement with JMB (Jama’atul Mujahideen, Bangladesh). In his confessional statement under section 164, he also said he was directly involved in the gun attack on Iskcon temple in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur on December 10 night. He was also a member of the group that attacked Dr. Piero Parolari in front of BRTC bus terminal at Mirzapur village under Dinajpur Municipality on November 18.
Shariful was taken on 3-day remand after his arrest. Later, Police again took him on another 7- day remand on Tuesday, which was scheduled to end today. During the remand, Shariful gave some vital information, said the police.
A gang of criminals attacked Dahuchi Iskcon temple on December 10 that left two people injured. Locals of the area reportedly caught Shariful Islam with two crude bombs and handed him over to local police.
The next day, locals of Singra Salbagan area under Birganj upazila of Dinajpur caught a man named Mosabberul Alam with an AK-22 rifle. A villager was injured as Mosabberul fired on the villagers while attempting to flee. Mosabberul is now on 10 days remand, said police. Two separate cases were filed with Birganj and Kaharol police station over the incidents.
On December 12, M Humayun Kabir, DIG of Rangpur Range, informed journalists at a briefing that the assailants who carried out the attacks in Dinajpur since November 18 were linked to the banned Islamist outfit JMB.
