A new research project to improve storage of crops, fruits and vegetables was implemented in Rajshahi on Saturday. If the project is implemented properly, vegetables and fruits, such as potatoes, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, carrots and mangoes, among others, can be stored up to three to six months without using any type of chemicals. The natural crops storage project was inaugurated at Padma Residential area by the facility’s founder, Prof Dr Manzur Hossain of the Botany department of Rajshahi University (RU). Prof Hossain said, “Under the project, a cold storage with a length of 21 feet and a width of 38 feet will be built, where separate rooms can be used for research under regulated temperature.”
He said mangoes can be stored for three months, carrots for six months, and tomatoes for three months by ethylene management processes under this project. “If we are able to implement the project, the preservation cost of natural crops would be greatly reduced,” he added.
Prof Hossain was credited with the invention of the first natural grain storage in the country last year.
He further said the project would be completed within 90 days at a cost of about Tk 20 lakh. The funds were provided by Al-Arafah Islami Bank. Kazi Tawhid-ul-Alam, deputy managing director of Al-Arafah Islami Bank, was present as the chief guest at the inauguration.
Abed Ahmad Khan, executive vice president of Al-Arafah Islami Bank, and Prof. Dr AKM Rafiul Alam of RU’s department of Botany were also present as special guests.
