The Election Commission has sought cooperation of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to tame the ruling party supporters and make them adhere to the electoral code of conduct properly, since there are allegations of breach of law against them, ahead of the municipality polls slated for December 30.
“We have allegations that the ruling party men are violating the election code of conduct. We hope that those at different levels of the government will help us address the issue. We urge the Head of the Government (prime minister) to look into the matter,” Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz said yesterday.
Talking to the media at his office in the Election Commission Secretariat in the city, Shah Nawaz said that action will be taken against those who violate the election rules.
“Whoever he/she may be, steps will be taken against the responsible person for breaching the electoral code of conduct. We want to assure the Returning Officers that the Commission will assist them fully if they take steps against those guilty of violating the election code of conduct. If they take action, we will also take steps against the guilty,” he said.
Replying to a query on alleged negligence on the part of the Returning Officers, he said, “We are not getting too many reports of violation of the election code. We have clearly told the Returning Officers at meetings with them to carry out their duties impartially and fearlessly.”
About BNP’s allegation that the Commission is working on behalf of the ruling party, he said, “The Commission is working impartially and independently.
It is not under any pressure. If any party raises any allegation, it is their choice...any party can raise allegations.”
When his attention was drawn to the menace of booth capturing during upazila and city corporation polls, he said, “We won’t allow any such act. None will be spared if found involved in this kind of activity.”
