Business leaders of Bangladesh yesterday gave a proposal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form an Indo-Bangla joint private sector working group to further ease Indian investment to Bangladesh and boost exports to the neighbouring country.
Abdul Matlub Ahmad, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI), and other business leaders made the request to Modi when they met him at a city hotel.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Matlub said the deals that have been signed between Bangladesh and India would increase the trade and commerce relationship of the two countries. “The agreements and instruments would reduce the Bangladesh-India trade gap and boost exports from Bangladesh to India,” he added.
The FBCCI president said they had greeted the Indian prime minister for visiting Bangladesh and proposed to form a joint working group in the private sectors of the two countries.
Agencies add: The FBCCI president said the Bangladeshi businesses also demanded 50 acres of land in India for making investment in the RMG sector.
"Modi said his government would welcome the BGMEA proposal," Matlub added.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) requested for the land to establish an “Importing Company of Garment” for retailing garments in the markets across India, he said.
“We welcome you,” said Abdul Matlub Ahmed quoting the Indian Prime Minister.
The FBCCI President said a new horizon on the business relationship of the two countries is being sighted following the successful visit of Narendra Modi to Bangladesh.
The FBCCI president said they basically came to extend their greetings to the Indian PM for visiting Bangladesh.
During the call on, President of Chittagong Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam urged the Indian Prime Minister for taking an initiative to build a deep-sea port in Bangladesh coastal area near the port city of Chittagong.
BGMEA President M Atiqul Islam, FBCCI 1st Vice President Md Shafiul Islam, DCCI President Md Hossain Khaled, and MCCI President Syed Nasim Manzur were, among others, present.
