Indian PM?happy to see Hasina materialise Bangabandhus dream

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his happiness to see that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is in charge of implementing the dream of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build the Sonar Bangla, government officials told The Independent yesterday.
“Things are advancing the way Bangabandhu had dreamt of, to build Sonar Bangla and I am happy to see this responsibility in the hands of his daughter”, a top government official quoted Modi as saying to Prime Minister Hasina during a meeting between the two leaders on Saturday at the Prime Minister’s Office.
New Delhi understands that ‘Awami League is their best bet’, the official said, admitting that both the heads of governments talked about politics in Bangladesh.
The official also said that the government is happy about the visit as it reflected India’s strong support for the present Awami League-led government.
“The message of this visit was love and friendship,” said another official, who had information about the Saturday’s talks between the two prime ministers.
The officials also said that compared to earlier Indian prime ministers, Narendra Modi appears to be different because of his thoughts about the development and prosperity of the whole region, rather than of his country alone.
“He wants to consider the success of the countries in the region as success of his own country. He believes that India cannot prosper if its neighbours are not prosperous,” said the official.
During the meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Modi mentioned the devastating earthquake in Nepal, stressing that all the neighbouring countries will have to come forward to help Nepal in this regard, said the official.
In all the meetings held at the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday, Modi had hinted that he wants to take the Dhaka-New Delhi relationship to a new era, said the officials.
The Indian prime minister unequivocally stated that unresolved issues between the two neighbours cannot hinder the relationship. “The relationship that was built in 1971 through blood will remain intact forever,” Modi was quoted as saying by the officials.

They said that the Indian leader considers Bangladesh’s development as India’s development, because ‘India will experience cold wind if it rains in Bangladesh’.
About the much-talked about Teesta water sharing agreement, according to the officials, the Indian prime minister requested Hasina to have faith in him, saying that he will solve the problem taking everyone on board as he did in case of the Land Boundary Agreement.
He asked for some time to settle the issue, the officials said.
The Indian prime minister said water has no boundary, said the officials. “It is a human issue which is directly related to people’s lives and livelihood. Like air and birds, water does not abide by any boundary,” Modi was quoted as saying.
According to the officials, Modi holds a different view on the issue of sharing of the common rivers. “Modi considers it a human issue and emphasises on coordinated water resources management,” said an official.
Modi was full of praise for Sheikh Hasina for the security cooperation, said the officials, adding that the Indian prime minister is of the opinion that his Bangladeshi counterpart did not give any concession in combating terrorism, which has directly benefited India.
