11 charged with murder of RU teacher

Police yesterday submitted a chargesheet against 11 people, including Rajshahi unit Jubo Dal convener Anwar Hossain Ujjal, in a case for the killing of Rajshahi University (RU) Prof AKM Shafiul Islam, reports UNB. The other accused are Abdus Samad Pintu, Ariful Islam Manik, Sirajul Islam, Sabuj, Al Mamun, Arif, Sagor, Zinnat Ali, Ibrahim Khalil and Nasrin Akhter Reshma. Inspector of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshai police Rejaus Sadik submitted the chargesheet to Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate’s court.
Although the DB submitted the chargesheet with the court on November 30, the matter was disclosed to the media on Thursday.
Talking to reporters, Rejaus Sadik, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said they could not find the relation with the facebook status of ‘Ansar-Al-Islam Bangladesh-2’, a suspected militant outfit, which claimed responsibility for the murder.
The IO claimed that the teacher was killed as a sequel to a personal dispute.
Prof Shafiul Islam was stabbed by some unknown assailants on his way home at Chouddapai near the RU campus around 3:30 pm on November 15 in 2014.
He succumbed to his injures at the Intensive Care Unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital half an hour later. Police detained 20 people in connection with the killing of Prof Shafiul Islam on Nov 16.
