Alem-Ulema at a meeting yesterday decided to issue a common ‘Fatwa’ (Islmic religious edict) against militancy with signatures of the country’s 1 lakh Alem-Ulema, reports UNB. The decision was taken at a views-exchange meeting titled ‘Role of Islam in Eradicating Militancy: Bangladesh Perspective’ at the Police Headquarters. Chairman of Bangladesh Jamiatul Ulema Parishad Maulana Fariduddin Masud will form a committee in this regard.
Addressing the programme, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque urged the Alem-Ulemas to extend cooperation in the fight against militancy. “Militancy in our country at the budding stage now…we want to eradicate it right now with the cooperation of all,” he said.
About allegations against qawmi madrasas, the IGP said he does not believe that the qawmi madrasas have been breeding militants as among those arrested on charge of their involvement in militancy, very few are students of madrasas, most of them are Jamaat-Shibir activists he added.
The chief police boss urged the Alem-Ulema to create a social movement against militancy. Alem-Ulema and Mashayekh can only bring the misguided youths towards the right path through motivation, he added.
Mentioning that police do not want to control any mosque as well as ‘Khudba’ during Jumma’ prayers, the IGP called upon Alem-Ulema to deliver speeches against militancy during ‘Khutba’.
Maulana Fariduddin said those who have been carrying out militant activities in the name of Islam are the enemies of people.
He urged the religious leaders to raise voice against spreading militancy at Waj Mahfils (gathering to hear Islamic sermon) through wrong interpretation of Islam.
