The consignments of the crustaceans products, including shrimp, imported into the European Union (EU) from Bangladesh will no longer require ‘analytical tests’, according the European Commission decisions taken based on an audit report, reports UNB. “Based on the results of the audit and the very low number of non-compliant consignments, it appears unnecessary to require that consignments of the products imported into the Union from Bangladesh be accompanied by analytical tests,” the commission said adding that decision taken in 2008 should therefore be ‘repealed’.
Crustaceans form a very large group of arthropods, usually treated as a subphylum, which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles.
The EU imposed some ‘emergency measures’ or safeguard on frozen fish import from Bangladesh in 2008, following the detection of veterinary medicinal products and unauthorised substances in frozen fish exported to the EU from Bangladesh.
The final report of an audit carried out in Bangladesh from April 20 to 30 this year to evaluate the control of residues and contaminants in live animals and animal products, including controls on veterinary medicinal products.
The audit report concluded that the system in place for residues controls in aquaculture offers guarantees equivalent to the requirements laid down in Union legislation and the number of non-compliant consignments has decreased significantly.
The ‘emergency measures’ were applicable to crustaceans imported from Bangladesh following the detection of residues of veterinary medicinal products and unauthorised substances in crustaceans imported into the Union from Bangladesh and intended for human consumption.
According to previous decision, member states are to authorise the import into the Union of the products, provided that they are accompanied by the results of an analytical test carried out at the place of origin to ensure that they do not present a danger to human health.
