At least 8 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhattra Leaue (BCL), Islamic University (IU) unit, were hurt including 1 bullet injured in a clash between two rival factions of the party yesterday. The clash took place around 11.30am between the supporters of university BCL President M Saiful Islam and that of Vice President Mizanur Rahman Mizu at the university administration building due to disagreements over a recruitment board of the university statistics department.
Sources said, teachers of Statistics department came to the university vice chancellor office around 11am to discuss requirement of the department for recruitment. But some activists of IU BCL vice president Mizanur Rahman Mizu group went there and demanded that recruitments be made as per their suggestions.
The university Vice Chancellor Professor Abdul Hakim Sarker, however, refused to accept the demand. Later, angry activists came out from the VC office and started vandalising the office collapsible gate and other installations. Meanwhile, a supporter of IU BCL president group, Shisir Rahman Babu, arrived at the spot and asked the angry BCL men to stop vandalism.
At one stage, Shisir Rahman opened fire using a firearm that critically injured a leader named Saidur Rahman Babu, said sources.
Following the shooting, activists of vice president group led by Ashikur Rahman Japan beat up Babu and a clash among the two factions broke out that injured at least 8 BCL activists.
The injured were identified as BCL president group supporters Shisir Rahman Babu, Karuzzaman Shagor, Razu Ahmed, Ataur Rahamn, Noman Robin, Raju Ahmed and vice president group members Jewel Rana Halim and Saidur Rahman Babu.
The injured were admitted to IU central hospital. Later, bullet hit Saidur Rahman Babu was sent to Kushtia Sadar Hospital.
IU BCL president M Saiful Islam said they demanded that the authorities take proper step against the group responsible for the attack and vandalism.
University Proctor Professor M Mahbubar Rahman said law enforcers were deployed on the campus to avert any further untoward incident and that the situation was under control.
