Three films to be screened at Shilpakala today

Noman Robin’s full-length feature film ‘Common Gender-The Film’, late noted filmmaker Tareque Masud’s final film ‘Runway’ and international award-winning ‘Brihannala’ directed by Murad Parvez will be screened today at 10am, 4pm and 6pm respectively, as a part of the 15-day event titled ‘Bangladesh Film Festival 2015’ at the National Art Plaza of Bangladesh Shilapakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the city. ‘Common Gender’ is a film based on the love story of a transgender. The film portrays vividly the conventional ways transgenders earn their living as well as the illegal trade they are forced to engage themselves in, like other marginalized communities of the country. In the film, seeing Susmita, a transgender youth, at a wedding programme, Sanjoy offers to become his friend. As they keep on spending time talking over the phone, Sanjoy once tells Susmita that it could be much better had Susmita been a girl. These changes something inside Shusmita, who dresses like a girl, starts to feel the presence of a woman within. Susmita starts behaving more like a woman and falls in love with Sanjoy. When Sanjoy takes Susmita to their home, his parents rebukes him for befriending a transgender person and insults them both. The humiliation adds to many others and forces Susmita to commit suicide. The film casts Sohel Khan, Shazu Khadem, Dilip Chakrabarti, Chitro Lekha Guho, Doly Jahur, Kazi Raju, Tota Mia, Shahidul Alam Sachchu and others.
On the other hand, the story of the film ‘Runway’ centres on the youth Ruhul, who lives with his family in a small hut next to the runway of an airport. His mother Rahima struggles to support the family by selling milk from a cow bought with a micro credit loan. His sister Fatima works long hours in a garment factory. There’s been no word from their father for over a month, since he left for a job in the Middle East. A Madras dropout, Ruhul spends his days wandering under the shadow of the planes, aimless and frustrated in his futile efforts to find work. The film stars Nusrat Imroz Tisha, Jayanto Chattopadhyay, Nasrin Akter, Rikita Nandini Shimu and Fazlul Haque, among others.
Besides, ‘Brihannala’ depicts the story of Hindu-Muslim conflicts set in a small village called Mohanpur. The film stars Sohana Saba, Ferdous Ahmed, Azad Abul Kalam, Jhuna Choudhury and Intekhab Dinar, among others. l
