Voters see triangular fight

Voters in Khagrachhari are expecting a triangular fight in mayoral polls later this month. Independent candidate and sitting mayor Md Rafiqul Alam, Awami League backed Md Shane Alam and BNP’s Advocate Abdul Malek Mintu have wide support among the voters. But the incumbent has an edge over others in the triangular fight for the coveted mayoral post, observers here said. Civil society leader and Khagrachhari District Corruption Prevention Committee (KDCPC) President Sudarsan Dutta said running municipality Mayor Md Rafiqul Alam has completed development works involving around Tk 100 cores in last five years, and that there is no complaint from the residents so far, Sudarsan said.
“I think running Mayor Md Rafiqul Alam still holds a fair chance and might get reelected. And he will certainly deliver better services to the residents,” Sudarsan said. Khagrachhari district BNP President Wadud Bhuiyan confidently said most of 33,619 voters are BNP supporters and they will vote for the party candidate. BNP candidate will hopefully bag at least 60 percent of votes, he said. District Awami League President and local lawmaker Kujendra Lal Tripura said contest might be Triangular, but the AL candidate will come out winner. “Voters in the Khagrachhari have seen huge development work done during the AL-led government period and this trend will continue if AL candidate wins the race. Voters are the best judges and hopefully, they will choose best mayor for next five years,” he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer for Khagrachhari Municipality ATM Kousar Hossain said there are 33619 voters. Of which, 19122 are male and 14497 female voters. They will exercise their franchise at 85 vote centers on December 30.
