Universities celebrate Victory Day
Different public and private universities have celebrated Victory Day with due respect and solemnity on Wednesday. Students, teachers and administrative members of North South University (NSU) placed wreaths at the national memorial early Wednesday.
A discussion was also held on the campus where Gour Gobinda Goushami, vice-chancellor (in charge) was the chief guest. M Emdadul Haq, director, Student Affairs, NSU, chaired the programme. Hassan Mahmud, faculty member of NSU, also a freedom fighter, shared his experience from his own life with the audiences.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) observed the day with various programmes, including --hoisting the national flag and march past at dawn, offering wreath at the university’s Bangabandhu Mural and Joy Bangla sculpture. Md Mahbubar Rahman, vice-chancellor of the university, placed wreaths. A victory day procession also brought out on the campus to mark the day with participating students, teachers and employees of the University. The authorities of East West University (EWU) hoisted national flag on the university premise at 6:33 am and offered special munajat for peace and prosperity of the country on Wednesday morning at Aftabnagar, Dhaka.
The of Board of Trustees and former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, vice-chancellor, treasure, deans of different faculties were also present on the occasion to celebrate the victory day.
Meanwhile, teachers and officers of Gono Bishwabidyalay placed wreath at the National Memorial, Savar and paid homage to the great heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Vice-Chancellor Mesbahuddin Ahmad, Registrar Md Delower Hossain, Principal, Gonoshasthaya Samajvittik Medical College Laila Parveen Banu, Exam Controller, Mir Murtoza Ali and faculty members and officers were present on the occasion.
 
S Korea provides books, DVDs to DU

South Korean Ambassador in Dhaka Ahn Seong-doo on Tuesday handed over 108 books and 108 DVDs to the ‘Korea Corner’ in the central library of the Dhaka University. DU Vice-chancellor Prof Dr AASM Arifin Siddique received the books and DVDs when the Korean Ambassador met him at the latter’s office. The Korean envoy said during the last 42 years, the two countries have enjoyed the excellent relationship and Korea will remain an excellent partner of Bangladesh for its development, said a press release. The Ambassador said the initiative will help enhance strengthening partnership and mutual cooperation between Korea and Dhaka University. The Korean envoy said the Korean Embassy in Dhaka is continuously assisting to improve the information and educational environment of the Korea Corner in central library of Dhaka University to enhance knowledge about Korea.
The DU VC thanked the Korean government and Korean Ambassador for books and educational equipment. He said Korea is Bangladesh’s development partner and Korean government has been providing assistance help and cooperation at various fields, especially education sector of Bangladesh, for long time.
The Korea Corner is playing a strong role as a ‘communication bridge’ between Korea and the students of Dhaka University. The Korea Corner set a good example for such collaboration. In 2013, Republic of Korea and Dhaka University signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and set up this Korea Corner to marks the 40th anniversary of establishment of the diplomatic relations between Korea and Bangladesh.

Russian team meets DU  VC

A three-member delegation, led by Alexander P Demin, director of Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Dhaka and First Secretary of Russian Embassy in Bangladesh, paid a courtesy call on Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office yesterday. Dean of Engineering and Technology Faculty of DU Rafiqul Islam and Chairman of Computer Science and Engineering Department Sabbir Ahmend were present on the occasion, said a press release.
During the meeting they discussed the possibilities of undertaking joint collaborative academic and research programmes on computer science and engineering subjects by the Dhaka University and Ural Federal University, Russia. They also discussed the possibilities of introducing joint PhD and Masters Programmes at the two universities.
The delegation members expressed their keen interest to provide short training programmes on science and technology to young faculty members of DU in Russia. They have agreed to sign a MoU in this regard. Other members of the delegation were Andrey Sozykin and Dmitry Bazanov of Ural Federal University, Russia.

Seminar on study of senior citizens

A seminar on ‘Study of the Senior Citizens in Bangladesh’ was held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday. DU Population Sciences Department organised the seminar with the assistance of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA), said a press release here. DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the seminar as the chief guest with chairman of Population Sciences Department M Aminul Haque in the chair. Prof Arefin stressed taking care of senior citizens and said, "We should maintain good relations with senior citizens to remove their loneliness." UNFPA Deputy Representative in Dhaka Iori Kato also spoke on the occasion.
