At least 15 people, including traders, were injured in a clash between traders and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of Dhaka College in the capital’s New Market area yesterday, reports UNB. Locals said when a BCL activist allegedly tried to take away a Saree giving the seller Tk 2, 000 instead of Tk 8,000 from a shop, ‘Bismillah Cloth Centre’, at Dhanmondi Hawkers Market around 3:30pm. At one stage, some traders beat up the BCL man, leaving him injured. As the news spread around, a group of BCL men of Dhaka College unit went to the market and beat up some traders, triggering a clash that left 10-15 people injured. Later, the clashes spilled over onto Science Laboratory crossing to New Market, disrupting traffic for some time. The BCL men also vandalised a footpath shop and torched four motorcycles on the road.
Seven critically injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). BCL leaders said the clash broke out as some traders physically assaulted the wife of a BCL activist of Dhaka College following an altercation with the workers of the shop over a saree price. Contacted, Deputy Commissioner (Ramna) Jasim Uddin said they brought the situation under control.
