Bangladesh edged past Nepal 1-0 in a FIFA Friendly to end their SAFF Championship preparation on a good note yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Bangladesh team have been taking preparation for the SAFF for last 20 days under coach Maruful Haque but they had some training sessions and played two World Cup qualifiers and a tournament in China under Italian coach Fabio Lopez.
Bangladesh suffered defeat in the all matches under Lopez, who was ultimately dismissed and Maruful replaced the Italian as head coach.
In the debut match, Maruful’s boys could not shine as they failed to demonstrate the expected performances as they looked very disorganised in the full 90 minutes.
However, none of the hosts or the visitors could play with pace, as just after the kick-off both sides looked disorganised, though Bangladesh were a bit better in ball possession but could not play their usual game against the strong man-marking strategy of Nepal team.
Nepal, who were sharp to destroy all the attack of Bangladesh before crossing the central line and to turn into danger while the visitors not looked to be in aggressive attitude but to halt the attacks of the opponents.
Despite a disorganised show in the full first 45 minutes game, Bangladesh could break the deadlock on 18th minute through Shakhawat Rony.
Shakhawat Rony, who scored two goals of Bangladesh 2-0 win over Nepal in 2013 in the AFC Challenge Cup, beat the opponents’ goalkeeper with a good header when Yasin Khan floated super cross from the left side and Rony was quick to rush inside the area to mark the target (1-0).
It was expected that after taking the lead Bangladesh would be more disciplined and will demonstrate better performance but they could not entertain some three thousand fans, as the home side could not display their best.
The second half was almost the replay of the first session as Bangladesh could not play with authority while Nepal were better in ball possession in the full second half and were also came closer to equalise the margin while a strong attempt of Rohit Chand
shattered the cross piece on 75th minute.
Coach Maruful in his post-match reaction said that he was not happy with the players’ approach, as he said, “They could not implement my plans, though the result is well.”
“It is their recovery period, hope before flying to India they could able to recover. I think they could play 30 percent of their ability. They should change their attitude, as after taking the lead they come to defensive, they should have to come out from these tendency.”
Maruful also said that he has already sketched his first 11 for SAFF from this match.
Patrick Aussems, counterpart of Maruful said. “I am happy, as the boys could play with my plan, though result was not in our favour but it does not matter. The youngsters, who have a less experiences in the international game, have done well.”
