Securing the border with Myanmar

Securing the border
with Myanmar

A well guarded border, particularly with Myanmar, should always be our priority because problems along the borders are many. While main problems along our border with India are trigger-happy BSF personnel who often kill Bangladeshis and smuggling, in the Myanmar border the security concerns assume greater proportions as prospect of cross-border terrorism in this border is high. That is why BGB’s plan to create an aviation wing is appropriate and the government should give adequate support in the regard.
In fact, according to a report published in this daily yesterday, the government has already sanctioned three helicopters against the BGB’s demand of four. Bangladesh has in total 400 km long border with Myanmar and the border along the three hill districts, Khagrachhari, Bandarbans and Rangamati are very crucial from security considerations. As there was once armed rebellion in these districts, arms used to be smuggled through Myanmar border into Bangladesh. There still exists potential for violence in the region and a BGB team with air patrolling capacity in the area is a good security idea.
Strict border patrolling along Myanmar is also an imperative as destructive yaba tablets are always smuggled into our land from that country. In fact, it seems smugglers of yaba are ahead of our security apparatus because the addiction to it has become so pervasive among a section of youth all over the country.
There are two other important things. One, we often find reports of fishermen from Myanmar entering our sea territory to catch fishes. This problem of ours also exists with India. While patrolling over the sea and protecting our sea resources is strictly the duty of the Coast Guard, coordination between the BGB and the Coast Guard can produce better results in protecting both the land border and sea border at the strategic points. From that point of view, an aviation wing of BGB will be helpful.
Second, Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar often face persecution from its Buddhist population and when they face it they come in droves in boats through the Naf river. Moreover, there is also the necessity of checking the armed incursion of Myanmar separatists.
So, there are good many reasons to have strong patrolling of our border along Myanmar. The BGB is also right when it says it needs to establish more border outposts for effective border patrolling. In fact, an aviation wing of the BGB has been overdue. Even the elite force RAB has helicopters to enforce law and order inside the country.
