The 44th martyrdom anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Capt Mohiuddin Jahangir, who embraced martyrdom in a battle with the Pakistani army at Rehaichar in Chapainawabganj town during the liberation war in 1971, was observed in the district yesterday. District unit command of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, district administration, zila Parishad, police administration, sadar upazila parishad and various political and cultural organisations placed wreaths at the altar of the monument of Jahangir in the morning at Rehaichar.
Discussion and prayer session were also arranged at the Sonamasjid premises, near the grave of Jahangir in Shibganj upazila.
The meeting arranged by Muktijoddha Sangsad was held with district commander Sirajul Hoque in the chair. It was addressed by sub-sector commander of sector 7 Brigadier General (Rtd) Giasuddin Ahmed Chowdhury Bir Bikrom, Brigadier General (Rtd) Md Enamul Hoque and Golam Mostofa Biswas MP.
On December 10, 1971, Capt Jahangir along with 50 freedom fighters crossed the Mohananda River and fought against the Pakistan army.
The freedom fighters took position near Rehaichar in Chapainawabganj town on December 13.
