DU severs academic ties with Pakistan

DU Correspondent

Dhaka University has severed all formal academic ties with all Pakistani universities and government organisations until the country seeks unconditional apology for the crimes it committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
The Dhaka University syndicate, the highest decision making body, approved the decision in one of its emergency meeting yesterday and the decision will come into effect immediately.
DU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique made the announcement at a press briefing at the seminar room of the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury senate building yesterday
afternoon. “We have severed all bilateral relations including MoUs (memorandums of understanding) on exchange of teachers and students, cultural exchange, sports, and visit with Pakistan and its institutions from today (Monday) as Pakistan denied the genocide committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh,” the VC said.
The VC also urged the government to sever all diplomatic ties with Pakistan for ‘the audacity that it has shown over Bangladesh’s war crimes trial’.
Terming Pakistan a terrorist nation, the VC also urged the government to raise its voice seeking annulment of Pakistan’s membership from the SAARC.
The government should appeal to the United Nations seeking the cancellation of Pakistan’s membership from the global body as well as the country’s stance is against the spirit of the organisation, Siddique added.
He also demanded the trial of 195 Pakistani armed forces members who conducted anti-human activities in 1971.
“If anyone is already passed away, they should face post-death trial” he said.   After the executions of Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Muzajid, two convicted war criminals, Pakistan issued a statement that there was no genocide in Bangladesh in 1971.
Bangladesh summoned Pakistan high commissioner in Dhaka and in retaliation Pakistan also summoned acting high commissioner of Bangladesh posted to the country.
