The government yesterday lifted the temporary access restrictions on all internet based messaging and calling apps and social networking sites including viber, whatsapp, skype, twitter and imo..
“We have withdrawn all temporary restrictions on the social networking sites as well as calling and messaging apps as per the decision of the government,” State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim told The Independent yesterday afternoon.
“All the operators will be given directives over the decision within an hour to unblock the apps and sites, and then, those will be become accessible taking the necessary time for activation,” she added.
The government on Sunday night blocked access to Twitter, Skype and imo without mentioning any specific reason and in less than 24 hours of time, these were being unblocked. Temporary restrictions on accessing whatsapp, viber and facebook were imposed by the government on November 18 citing security reasons.
Access to social networking site facebook was restored on December 10, after keeping its access restricted to the people for 22 days, following a government decision.
Tarana Halim said the government has taken the decision for convenience of the people.
