An armed man was held in Birganj upazila of Dinajpur yesterday in connection with the Thursday night’s bomb and gun attack on an Iskcon temple in Kaharole upazila of the district. Local people caught the man and handed him over to police.
Witnesses said Mosabberul Islam, 23, of Lalmonirhat sadar upazila, had been roaming around the Singra Salbagan village since Friday morning. Seeing suspicious movement of the youth, local people encircled him. However, Mosabberul fired at least six bullets to flee the spot but failed.
One of the villagers, Rafiqul Islam, was shot at that time. He received bullet on his left thigh. With Rafiqul, a total of three people so far received bullet injuries in the upazila since Thursday night. Other two injured were Ranjit Chandra Roy and Mithun Chandra Roy. Of them, Mithun was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as his condition was critical.
After giving Mosabberul a good beating, the local people handed him over to police.
Earlier, police arrested another person in connection with the incident and seized a gun and 42 bullets. He was also apprehended by the local people and was later handed over to the police.
Ruhul Amin, superintendent of police in Dinajpur, said the two arrestees were being treated at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital as they faced ‘massive public wrath’.
Meanwhile, people of the Hindu community formed a human chain in front of Dinajpur Press Club protesting the Thursday’s attack and demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers.
On Thursday night, two Hindu devotees received bullet injuries when assailants fired gunshots and hurled bombs at Iskcon temple when its governing committee was in a meeting inside.
