The 6th Annual National Conference and 1st International Glaucoma Meeting organised by Bangladesh Glaucoma Society (BGS) was held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city yesterday.
Prof Dr Syed Modasser Ali, former Health, Family Welfare and Social Welfare Affairs advisor to the Prime Minister, was the chief guest at the conference with participation of several hundred eye and glaucoma specialists.
BGS President Prof M Nazrul Islam was in the chair.
Prof Dr Modasser Ali said, "In the medical services of the country, we have only one or two limitations, otherwise we can compete with the medical services of other countries."
"According to a survey conducted recently in Dhaka, at least 2.8 per cent people are affected by glaucoma while 90 per cent of them don’t know about the disease,” Secretary General of BGS Dr Nazneen Khan said.
Glaucoma is a kind of eye disease that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve at the point where it leaves the eye to carry visual information to the brain.
It is the second largest cause of blindness in the country, accounting for three percent of the people aged over 40 years.
In Asia, where eye tests are not common, checking for glaucoma is more difficult and is not likely to get picked up until it reaches a stage where it is much harder to treat, said experts at the meeting.
