Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) will implement a pilot project titled ‘Urban Management of Internal Migration Due to Climate Change’ with an estimated cost of around Tk82.30 crore for the uplift of the climate-forced migrants.
The project is aimed at improving the social-economic status of those who are forced to migrate to the city area due to climate change.
Recently, acting mayor of RCC Nizam ul Azim at a view-exchange meeting with the project advisers discussed the nitty-gritty of the project.
Hans Jaysim Harman, chief adviser of the project, advisers Akteruzzaman, Shabnam Khanam, Enamul Haque, Regional Coordinator of RIUD, Syeda Jebunnesa Sultana, secretary of RCC, Ashraful Haque, chief engineer of RCC, and Khandaker Mahabubur Rahman, chief officer (revenue), were present.
According to sources, the project entails accommodation, education, vocational training, health care and a few other programmes.
Consequently, the project will play a vital role in developing socio-economic status for the people of refugee community, they hoped.
Not only for settled refugee community, more programmes have already been launched for floating refuges, they noted.
They informed that to implement the project, already six slums have been selected primarily, but RCC will prepare the final list.
“If the pilot project works successfully, more new projects of big budget will start in Rajshahi city area,” they said.
