The Butterfly Fair-2015 organised by the Department of Zoology of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was held on the campus yesterday amid much funfare and gaiety, drawing an overwhelming number of visitors.
The visitors enjoyed live butterflies of multiple colours and patterns and watched photographs of different species of the creature at an exhibition along side.
With the slogan "Urley Akashe Projapoti, Prokriti Pay Notun Goti” (The nature get new momentum if butterfly flies), the Zoology department organized the fair for the sixth time in association with Daffodil International University (DIU) , Prakriti O Jibon Foundation, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and with media partnership with private television Channel I.
JU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Abul Hossain inaugurated the fair releasing balloons and butterflies at Zahir Raihan Auditorium around 10am.
 Professor Monawar Hossain of the Zoology department, who is also the convener of the fair organising committee, Mukit Mozumder Babu, chairman of Prokiti O Jibon Foundation, Istiakh Uddin Ahmed, country representative of IUCN-Bangladesh, Director of Channel I Prof Dr SM Mahbub-Ul-Haque Mojumder, dean, Faculty of Science and Technology of Daffodil International University, were present on the occasion.
Besides, the country’s first butterfly park-cum-research centre was also inaugurated on the occasion.
Since early morning, students from different institutions, teachers, and children along with their family members, amateur photographers and butterfly lovers started arriving on the campus from different parts of Dhaka city to enjoy the fair.
Around 1,000 butterflies of 125 species were on exhibition.
The species include Plain Tiger, Common Crow, Plum Judy, Dingy Bush Brown, Common Duffer, Ape Fly, Pea Blue, Tiny Grass Blue, Oak Blue, Common Sailor, Common Rose, Blue Mormon, Striped Albatross, Mottled Emigrant, Common Grass Yellow, Monkey Puzzle, Blue Pansy and Painted Lady.
The daylong fair also included children's art competition on nature and butterfly, photography competition on butterfly, kite flying, butterfly identification competition, prize distribution of the competitions, cultural event and a documentary show on butterfly.
At the fair, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) arranged an award giving ceremony for contribution to conservation of biodiversity. Muzahid Rahman, a university student, who came to the fair said, “I'm very excited to visit the fair at the kingdom of natural beauty, Jahangirnagar University campus.”
