Two Hindu devotees received bullet injuries when assailants fired gunshots and hurled bombs at a temple in Kaharole upazila of the district yesterday night.
According to police, the incident took place around 8.40pm when the committee of a local ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temple was in a meeting inside.
Quoting witnesses, Monsur Ali Sarker, officer-in-charge of Kaharole Police Station, said five people, riding on two motorcycles, came to Bahuchi village and hurled a crude bomb which remained unexploded.
Later, they fired two gunshots at the temple leaving two persons injured on the spot and exploded two crude bombs, the OC added.
Local people, however, caught one of the assailants, identified as Safayet Hossain, in possession of a crude bomb, Kaharole Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rabiul Foysal said.
The injured were identified as Mithun Chandra Roy, 27, of Saidpur village under Kaharole upazila, and Ranajit Chandra Roy, 45, of Ishania village under Bochaganj upazila of Dinajpur. They were being treated at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Hospital sources said one of the victims sustained bullet injury on his chest while the other on leg.
The incident took place just five days after 10 people were injured as three crude bombs went off under the canopy of a ‘jatra’ show on the premises of Kantaji Temple in the upazila.
