Speakers at a rally here yesterday underscored the need for protecting the basic human rights of all citizens of the country, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Human Rights Council (BHRC) organised the rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city, marking the International Human Rights Day.
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the commission Dr Farid Uddin said the country’s people cannot enjoy all of their basic human rights even after 44 years of independence.
He urged all, including the government, to play a sincere role in protecting human rights in the society.
The rally followed a procession which started from the Central Shaheed Minar around 10am and ended at the Jatiya Press Club.
Over 1000 members of different human rights organisations from across the country took part in the procession, led by Dr Farid, with various colourful banners and festoons.
The organisations include Bangladesh Human Rights Commission, Bangladesh Civil Rights Society (BCRS), Federation of Bangladesh Human Rights Organizations (FBHRO), Bureau of Human Rights Bangladesh (BHRB), SHAREE and Center for Human Rights Movement (CHRM).
