The BNP's design in London to create anarchy across the country by jeopardising the ensuing municipal polls has backfired, the ruling Awami League yesterday alleged, reports BSS.
"By announcing its participation in the municipal polls BNP has fallen into an awkward position. They (BNP) can't back out from the polls now as it's not possible to announce withdrawal of some 235 contestants from the polls," said Awami League organising secretary Ahmed Hossain while speaking at a press conference at the political office of party president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi here.
The Awami League leader said, "It will be proved through this election which party enjoys popular support-whether the Awami League's election symbol 'boat' or the BNP's polls symbol 'sheaf of paddy'. It will be ascertained through the polls the people's nerve and also in which party they repose confidence now."
"Don't leave the field of polls at 11 am like that you did during Dhaka City Corporation polls. Those who are afraid of people's mandate choose the path of terrorism. Kindly, take recourse to democratic politics shunning the politics of terrorism and militancy severing relations with Jamaat," Ahmed Hossain said pointing at BNP.
Terming that the present Election Commission as an independent and neutral institution, the Awami League leader said the Election Commission didn't accept his party's proposal likewise it didn't also accept BNP's demand and in the process it has prepared a level-playing field for all the parties.
"Issuance of notices by the Election Commission (EC) against three lawmakers for violating election code of conduct bore the testimony to the facts that the EC is an independent and neutral institution," the AL leader said.
