The Election Commission has sent a letter to the Home Ministry asking it to ensure the security of candidates of countrywide municipal elections, reports UNB.
The letter, signed by EC Secretary Sirazul Islam, was sent to Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan yesterday, EC Deputy Secretary Shamsul Alam said.
“This is for the first time poura mayors are going to be elected along party line. The upcoming election has already created much enthusiasm among the voters. So, it needs to ensure the security of candidates for maintaining a peaceful election atmosphere and arranging free and peaceful polls,” the letter said.
The EC’s move came apparently amid allegations that many candidates, especially those of BNP, are facing various obstacles and receiving threats in 235 municipalities that are going to polls on December 30.
“Your (Home Secretary) attention is drawn to issue directives (from the ministry) for ensuring the security of candidates for maintaining a peaceful environment for holding the election in a free, fair and neutral manner,” the letter reads.
According to EC’s draft count of valid candidates after the scrutiny of nomination papers, 1057 mayoral candidates are contesting the polls, apart from those for councillor posts.
