The 44th death anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Ruhul Amin was observed at his native village Baghchapra in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali yesterday.
His daughter Noor Nagher inaugurated a Bijoy Mela, organised at the village, to mark the day. Born in 1934, Ruhul Amin joined the then Pakistan Navy in 1953.
On this day during the 1971 Liberation War, he was martyred during an operation on board Polash, a gunboat of Bangladesh Navy, in Rupsha River near Khulna town.
After the independence, he was given the title Bir Shreshtha, the highest gallantry award of the state, for his heroic contribution in the Liberation War.
He took part in Liberation War under sector 9.
