Absence of rule of law results in lynching: NHRC chief

Special Correspondent

Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Professor Mizanur Rahman yesterday said that the act of lynching is unacceptable. He, however, added that people are taking the law into their own hands and lynching suspected criminals due to frustration over the lengthy process of law, harassments at getting justice and the lack of rule of law in the country that delays justice.
He said this to journalists at the end of a seminar titled ‘Human Rights and Freedom of Expressions in Bangladesh’ organised by the NHRC yesterday marking the International Human Rights Day.
Referring to deaths due to mass beatings in which it appears that nobody owes any responsibility for the incidents, the NHRC chairman said that the state must take the responsibility to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The NHRC chairman expressed his frustration at, what he said, behaviour of the home ministry to discharge its duties as many a times the ‘desired response was not available.
Prof. Mizanur Rahman regretted that it was not possible always to get the expected cooperation from the home ministry.
“We have been seeking reports on certain allegations from the home ministry for a year or two despite repeated reminders,” he said.
The NHRC chairman complained that the law enforcement agencies are ‘suffering from’ certain audacious behaviour as they do not always work adhering to the law.
“In the past, the law enforcers had taken law into their own hands by bending the rules according to their whims. Now the political parties have understood their past mistakes,” the NHRC chief said without elaborating further.
