Indian citizen held with phensidyl
Border Guard Bangladesh arrested an Indian citizen along with 530 bottles of Indian phensidyl syrup from Moktarpur Padmar Char area of Rajshahi district on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrestee was General Sheikh, hailing from Khayertola area of Murshidabad district in India.
Assistant commander of Rajshahi BGB, Hasan Ali said a patrol team of Yousufpur BGB outpost arrested him along with 530 bottles of Indian phensidyl worth Tk 2.12 lakh from the area around 5pm.
The seized phensidyl bottles were handed over to the Charghat Model Police Station. A case was filed in this connection.
DU journalism deptt alumni’s reunion Jan 29
The Reunion and River Cruise-2016 of the Dhaka University Mass Communication and Journalism Alumni Association (DUMCJAA) will be held on January 29.

US professor meets DU VC
Dr Tapas Kar, professor of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Utah State University, USA called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique yesterday the latter’s office of the university.
Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences of DU M Imdadul Hoque and Munawar Sultana of DU Microbiology department were present on the occasion.
During the meeting they discussed the matters of mutual interest specially the possibilities of establishing a ‘Modeling & Simulation Centre’ at Dhaka University with the help of Utah State University, USA.
They also discussed regarding establishment of collaboration on research and higher education programs between Dhaka University and Utah State University, USA.
Boy drowns in pond
A teenage boy drowned in a pond at Kandiarchar area of Sylhet district on Tuesday.
The deceased was Fahim Ahmad, 15, son of Sona Miah of the village.
Witnesses said Fahim went to the pond near his house to take a bath at about 12:30 pm and suddenly he slipped into its water and drowned.
Local people recovered the body from the pond. Moglabazar union parishad chairman Mahmudul Haque Suhel confirmed the incident.
Youth gets life in arms case
A tribunal in Rajshahi on Tuesday sentenced a young man to life term imprisonment for possessing firearms.
The convict was Farhad Ali, 33, a resident of Hargram under Rajpara police station of the city.
According to the prosecution, on information, a team of police arrested Farhad along with some firearms on September 30, 2013.
A case was filed with Rajpara police station under the Arms Act.
After examining records and witnesses, Judge Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman of Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict.
7 drug peddlers arressted
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP)) in separate drives arrested seven drug peddlers, including two female addicts with 57 yaba tablets and 2kg hemp, from different areas of Chittagong on Monday night.
The arrestees were Tariqul Islam,25, Rimu Akter Tuli, 30, Beauty Begum,41, Mohammad Raju,35, Mohammad Badsha,26, Afsar uddin,36 and Anwar Hossain Liton,32.
A team of Biyazid thana police on secret information raided different areas under Biyazed thana in the city at 11 pm on Monday and arrested them with 57 yaba tablets and hemp.
Two held with yaba tablets in Ctg
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) in a drive arrested two people, including a female with 700 pieces of contraband yaba tablets from city's Bakalia area in the early Wednesday.
The arrested were identified as Mohammad Ishak, 35, and Mahmuda Begum, 25, both hailed from Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district.
Police nabbed Ishak and Mahmuda from a Dhaka-bound passengers' bus at about 1.30 am in Bakalia Shah Amanat Bridge area and seized the contraband drugs from their possession, said Mohammad Abul Monsure, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakalia thana.
50 injured in roof collapse
Some 50 people were injured, 14 seriously, as a tin-roofed structure collapsed during a football match on the playground of RC College in Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal on Thursday, reports UNB.
Witnesses said the tin-shed structure of the college caved in around 3.40pm as a large number of soccer fans, including students, perched on its roof to watch the football match.
Those suffered serious injuries in the incident were taken to the local hospital, the witnesses said.
Further details of the incident were still awaited.
