The overall Railway service has been improved considerably as the present government through its sincere efforts expanded railway lines along with rehabilitation work and revived different routes to make this popular public transport easier for the passengers and carrying goods, reports BSS.
The Bangladesh Railway (BR) has undertaken initiatives to bring 10 locomotives and 270 passenger coaches for further improvement of the public transport across the country, an official of the ministry told the news agency yesterday.
He said 10 more diesel electric locomotives would be added to the BR fleet in April, 2016, while 100 metre gauge (MG) and 50 broad gauge (BG) coaches financed by Asian Development Bank (ADB) would be brought in January next.
Besides, Bangladesh Railway would receive 120 BG coaches under the Indian Line of Credit (LoC) from January next, as the government signed the contract on January 21, 2015.
“The government has also undertaken various development projects to minimize rolling stock crisis and provide better service to the common people at a reasonable fare,” Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque said.
He said initiative has also been taken to bring 200 MG coaches under the suppliers credit financing. “We have procured locomotives, coaches and engaged them in the service to the passengers, thus restoring the image of Bangladesh Railway,” Hoque added.
“We have brought 165 BG and 81 MG tank wagons for carrying fuel for power stations and aviation sector and 220 flat wagons under Indian LoC,” he said.
