Blood thinner than water

by Ashfaque Choudhury
Blood thinner than water

Let’s date back to the year 1971. Let’s recap the horrific things that took place that year. Let’s now take one second hate to them from the core of the heart. Let’s despise those Pakistanis who did those things to our country. I feel pity for Pakistan because they thought that they will run over this country like anything, they will grind us into dust; but in return, we kicked them out so hard that even now they have problem remembering things. In this month of our Victory, many people will write articles about this and that, I am one of them. I am also one of those people who hate those oppressors just like any other proud Bangladeshi.

I am in my mid-thirties, thus, by default I have not been able to witness the war myself. But rest assured, if I were born in that era, for sure I would have killed at lease one or two of those oppressors. They probably are lucky that I was not born at that time.
I learnt about our independence war from my father, Ali Ahmed Zubair Choudhury. He is one of the witnesses of the hideous crimes that Pakistan perpetrated. At night whenever we sit together for a little chit chat, he will vividly paint a picture for me of how Pakistanis killed Bangladeshis just to show their dominance, how people would run from one village to another to save their lives. Tears roll down my eyes whenever I hear those stories.

They raped our women so that the next generation would be Pakistanis as well--how low can someone get? They would remove the clothes of men to see whether they are Muslim or not, as if they were the only people in the world with the power to decide whether someone is Muslim or not.

I heard this story once: Pakistani soldiers stripped an elderly man with a beard and cap to check whether he was a Muslim. The traumatised man ran around the entire day like a mad man, telling everyone that he IS Muslim.

Those Pakistanis were not happy only by doing that to the old man. When the man was running around like a mad man, they went to his house and started gang-raping his wife and four daughters. The saddest part is that one of the daughters was pregnant and they still went for her, remarking that the baby would be another ‘sala Bangali’, so it’s better to destroy it before it came into this world. After the brutal assault, the pregnant young woman could not even move an inch, as she was dead. If they were not satisfied at that, perhaps, they would have continued to defile the corpse. Probably they did that as well, because the person who told me that story could not continue and broke down in tears as the dead pregnant girl was his relative. How can people stoop to that level? How could one behave like this with another person? I ask those Pakistanis through this article: How could you do those things? Aren’t you a bit ashamed of what you have done? AREN`T YOU? But then, you don’t seem to remember any of it.

Hate is probably an understatement for them, if there were some other more hideous word to describe what they did, I would definitely use that.

Fast forward to our generation: we see how many people have forgotten the past. It is incredulous to see how some people support Pakistan when there is a cricket match and the opponent is Bangladesh. I despise those people. Hate them from the core of my heart.

We, the Bangladeshi people, condemn the Pakistanis for the heinous crimes that you committed in our golden land. But be sure of one thing--you guys will never live in peace till the time you pay for your sins, and paying for those sins will take a long, long time. Be sure about that.
