RAJSHAHI: Paediatric surgery, though in its early stages of development, is now progressing very well in Bangladesh, some renowned Paediatric Surgeons in a seminar here said, reports BSS. They mentioned that the country could develop Paediatric surgery further to provide treatment to children with congenital malformation of rare conditions with little support from government. They were addressing the National Scientific Seminar-2015 at Rajshahi Medical College Auditorium in the city on Friday. Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Bangladesh (APSB) and Department of Paediatric Surgery of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) jointly organised the seminar where pediatric surgeons from all over the country including the host Rajshahi joined.
Former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the opening session as the chief guest while Principal of RCM Prof Dr Abu Raihan Khandakar and Director of RMCH Brig Gen AKM Nasir Uddin spoke as special guests with Prof Dr Mustaque Ahmed, Department Head of Paediatric of RMC, in the chair. Local unit President of BMA Prof Dr Shahdidur Rahman Tarafder and its General Secretary Prof Dr Khalilur Rahman, General Secretary of RMC Teachers Association Prof Dr Mahbubur Rahman Khan and RMC Vice-principal Prof Dr Nawshad Ali also spoke. In the technical session, APSB President Prof Dr Abdul Aziz and Secretary General Prof Dr Abu Hanif Tablu talked about different aspects of treatment, including the prospects of pediatric surgery in Bangladesh. The government support could have brought the most advanced medicine and technology required for paediatric surgery, they said. “Main setbacks in the sector are lack of training and inadequate number of textbooks,” Prof Aziz said. “Government support for surgical training at home or overseas training under scholarship would be an advantage. Besides, specific government grant for books in department libraries could help overcome setbacks,” said Professor Aziz. It is also essential to encourage relationship with foreign experts so that they can exchange technology and expertise, he said. Referring to the advanced technology in the field, he said, “Laparoscopy is a wonderful new way to do surgery that enables children to recover quickly which saves money and time.”
